Republic of Ireland V Romania 0-0  (5-4 penalties)
Both teams came out of their group with three points and their were no favourites for this match. The game stayed 0-0 after 120 minutes, with both sides having opportunities. As nothing could separate the two sides, the match was decided on the penaly shoot out, each team scored their first 4 penalties. Pat Bonner saved Daniel Timofte’s penalty. Republic of Irelands centre- back, David Oleary scored the winning penalty that secured a place in the quarter finals for Jack Charlton’s Republic of Ireland. Few days later, Jack Charlton fulfilled his promising of taking the entire Irish football team to meet the pope.


Spain V Yugoslavia 1-2 AET
Both teams were playing as well as each other during the first half and most the second half, however in the 77th minute the Yugoslav midfielder Dragan Stojkovic finally broke the deadlock between the teams by scoring from a pass by fellow team mate Katanec.
Spain replied few minutes later with a goal by Julio Salinas. The game went to extra time and Yugoslavia scored few minutes into the extra period, with a second goal by Dragan Stojkovic. The game ended 2-1 to Yugoslavia after extra time.
