Aftre an awful opening match draw againbst the Republic of ireland, England put on a much improved performace in a group match against Holland as Gascoigne set his show to the world. It was Gazza who would set up a match winning goal for Mark Write to head in against Egypt, which booked top spot in the group. Gascoigne provided the goals in which England defeated Belgium and Cameroon, after extra time in the second round and quarter finals. England eventually lost to West germany via penalties in the semi finals.
