Johan Cruyff

Cruyff was without doubt the greatest player of the 1974 World Cup was very much a known man by that summer. Born on 25 April 1947, Cruyff made his professional first international appearance in 1964 for Ajax; whilst Cruyff stayed a player Ajax won the Dutch league few times, but what made a larger impression overseas were the wins of the European Cup in the successive years 1971, 1972 and 1973. By 1974, Cruyff had been world class player for eight years. The possessor of a ferocious shot, Cruyff seemed to score tirelessly from nearly any position. Willowy and quick, Cruyff moved all over the pitch in a manner made to pull opponents out of position thereby opening up chances for his team mates, it was unfortunate he did not win the world cup in 1974 as Holland lost to West germany in the final.
