Euro 72 – great players

Raoul Lambert – Belgium

He was a legend of the 1972 European Championships; he played in both of Belgium’s matches and was outstanding. He opened his account in the competition at the beginning of the third place play off match against Hungary. In total Lambert was capped on 33 occasions for his country and scored an impressive 18 goals. He spent much of his playing career with Belgian team Club Brugge. He also participated in the 1970 world cup finals for Belgium.

 

Gerd Muller – West Germany

Muller needs no introduction, as his record speaks for itself. He scored a staggering 68 goals in only 62 appearances for the German’s and holds the record for most world cup goals ever scored. He was the top scorer during Euro 72 with four goals, which in turn helped the Germans win the competition. He was European top scorer during the years 1970 and 1972. He proved to be a goal scoring machine while playing with top German side Bayern Munich; in total he scored 365 goals for them in only 427 appearances.

 

Paul van Himst – Belgium

Paul van Himst was a great football player. He won the Belgian championships on eight occasions playing for Anderlecht. He was a phenomenal goal scorer in the Belgium league, scoring 233 league goals in 457 matches. He played a large part in helping Belgium reach third place in the 1972 European Championships. He is one of Belgium’s most capped ever players winning 81 caps and scoring 30 goals for his country, another true European championships legend.
