Jens Lehmann

Lehmann was an outstanding performer during the 2006 world cup finals, helping the Germans in to the last four of the competition. He was notably in fine form during the Sweden and Argentina wins. He had already proved himself at intenrational level and with his club, Arsenal, in previous years.

 

Hernán Crespo

Crespo came in to the world cup as one of the favorites to win the golden boot. At the end of the competition, he was named in the team of the competition adn scored an impressive three goals, helping the Argentines through to the last eight. Prior the world cup, he had just won the premiership with Chelsea, while starring in a champions league final with AC Milan during the previous year.

 

Owen Hargreaves

Many people could not understand why Sven selected Hargreaves in to the squad prior the start of the finals, however he arguably proved to be Englands best player in the world cup. he was outstanding during the matches against Portugal and Ecuador. He plays his domestic football for German club, Bayern Munich.

 

Fabio Cannavaro

Fabio Cannavaro was a rock in the heart of the Italian defence throughout the world cup, he lifted the trophy for the Italians and was named in the team of the competition. He was in outstanidng form in the final against France.

 

Kaká

Kaka came in to the tournament promising magical football and he certainly delivered for the Brazilians. He scored Brazils first goal of the competition against Croatia and helped the Brazilians in to the last eight, it was a poor performance against the French that saw Brazil knocked out of the competition. In modern times, Kaka is widely regarded as the best player in the world.
