World Cup 1978 Trivia Facts

The 1978 World Cup is one of the most memorable tournaments in World Cup history. Argentina became the fifth host to win their own tournament, while the Netherlands became the first side to lose successive finals.  Highlights were plentiful and include Archie Gemmill’s famous goal against the Netherlands and Tunisia becoming the first African side to win a match at the World Cup when it defeated Mexico.  Sports betting fans were outraged when Welsh referee Clive Thomas infamously blew full time as the Brazilian winner was making its way to the back of the Swedish net. Mario Kempes was the leading marksman with six goals including two in the final. This would be the last World Cup to have just 16 sides.
