In the 1994 finals, Russia was selected into group B with Cameroon, Sweden, and Brazil. Russia lost its first two matches 2-0 Brazil 3-1 to Sweden. Out already, Russia destroyed Cameroon 6-1 with Oleg Salenko scoring a record of 5 goals in a single world cup match. Russia was eliminated from the competition with three points from one win and two losses. In 2002 they were knocked out in the first round. Early in their history they enjoyed Europen Championship success and reached the final of Euro 88, howveer suffered a 2-0 defeat to Holland.
