The world Basketball Federation, more well known by the French acronym FIBA, is an organisation of national organizations which governs world competition in basketball. Originally known as the Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur (hence FIBA), in 1989 it left the Amateur from its known name but retained the initialism.

The FIBA states the world rules of basketball, specifies the equipment and facilities needed, controls the transfer of athletes across nations, and monitors the appointment of world referees. 213 national federations are now members, organized since 1989 into 5 areas or "commissions": Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
