The United States were the hosts of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, despite soccer being relatively unpopular in the country compared to its more established sports, such as American football, basketball, and baseball. Despite football's lowly position in the states sports hierarchy, the U.S.-hosted 1994 tournament still holds the World Cup record for attendance at nearly 70,000 per match[14] and has been considered among the most successful World Cups in history. The U.S. made it to the second round for the first time in modern history. In the second round, the U.S. lost to eventual winners Brazil, 1-0, even though Brazil played much of the match with only ten players after a red card. The competition was still considered an overwhelming success for U.S. football.
