Romania is one of only four national sides to take part in the first three World Cups. However, they then qualified only once between the 1950 and 1986 competitions. Romania then had a solid run through the 1990s, progressing to the second round or better in three consecutive World Cups. The period was notable by the 1994 World Cup where Romania, led by Gheorghe Hagi, made the quarterfinals and upset Argentina 3-2 before losing to Sweden on penalty kicks.
