In 2000, Germany narrowly defeated South Africa in the FIFA vote to select the 2006 host. Other bids were made by England and Morocco. The success of Germany's bid was around by a hoax bribery affair which even led to a reselection. In the case of a 12-12 tie, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who wanted the South African bid, would have had to choose.
