Belgium 0 -2 Turkey
Belgium lost their previous match to Italy and only needed a draw against Turkey to qualify for the quarter finals. As half time approached, the Belgian defence were transfixed by a bouncing ball and Hakan Suker was in the zone to score for Turkey. Belgium had to chase the game and Sukar cashed in on the counter attack late on in the second half to confirm Turkey’s progression into the last eight for the first time.
France 3 – 0 Denmark
After some early nerves, France spent their opening game working up the Danish defence, Laurent Blanc rolled in the first goal and the world champions were looking good. Mid way into the second half Zidane passed the ball to the galloping Thierry Henry to fire home their second goal. With time running out, one substitute Patrick Viera passed to the other substitute Sylvan Wiltord who scored the third goal of the game.
Czech Republic 1 -2 France
The Czech Republic needed something against France and the tough enough challenge was compounded by Peter Gabriels early error and Thierry Henry scooped the ball into the net to give France the lead. The outstanding Pavel Nedved won the Czech’s a penalty that was converted by Karel Poborsky. However a French substitute would make a major contribution, the final French goal was scored by Djorkaeff which in turn condemned the 1996 finalists to an early exit from the tournament.
